Cardiff West Community High School

Humanities

At Cardiff West Community High School, our Humanities area inspires students to explore the world around them and understand the forces that shape societies and cultures. Through engaging and thought-provoking lessons in Geography, History, Religious Education, and Sociology, we encourage critical thinking, empathy, and a deep appreciation for diversity. Our curriculum is designed to connect past and present, local and global, helping students become informed, reflective citizens ready to contribute positively to the world.

Departmental vision Geography:

An awareness of the interconnections between humans and their environment in respect of the climate and nature emergency. To develop an understanding of how human actions in the past and present can affect interrelationships between the natural world and ultimately to develop an awareness of how the future sustainability of our world and climate change is influenced by the impact of these actions. Students will understand the causes, consequences and significance of the changes and interrelationships that have shaped societies at different levels of development.

Departmental vision History:

To encourage enquiry, curiosity and discover, think critically, reflect upon evidence, a deeper understanding of the concepts underpinning humanities, the ability to critically review different major events. Students will become aware of the interconnections between humans and their environment in both contemporary and historical contexts. They will be able to develop their own identity and an awareness of how they, as individuals, can shape the communities in which they live.

Departmental vision RE:

Within RE, we will aim for a deeper understanding of the key concepts. We will justify, present, analyse and evaluate a range of evidence and learners can then draw informed conclusions whilst being aware that there can be different interpretations. The ability to explain different points of view from worldwide religions and cultures will be developed. These will all allow the pupils to develop as self-aware, informed, ethical global citizens, who critically reflect on their own and others' beliefs, values and attitudes.

Departmental vision Sociology:

To be aware of different societies and how they operate, using Wales and the wider world as case studies throughout the course. To encourage learners to ask questions and look deeper their own presence within society; such as in education, in their family, in their friendship group and beyond. To inspire learners to understand the importance of their role in society. Sociology will allow learners to develop an understanding of varying cultures, values, norms, religions, ethics, viewpoints, family types and status, thus enabling them to earn a degree of respect and appreciation for the diverse world around them. Learners will assess multiple theorists’ viewpoints in order to create their own opinion on society.
