    Welcome to the Science Department 

    Our Science Department is dedicated to inspiring curiosity, critical thinking, and a deep understanding of the natural world. We aim to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in an ever-changing, technology-driven society. 

    Our Mission 

    To foster a love of science through hands-on learning, experimentation, and exploration. We encourage students to ask questions, think analytically, and apply scientific principles to real-world problems. 

    Subjects studied 

    • Biology – Explore life, ecosystems, genetics, and the diversity of organisms. 

    • Chemistry – Understand matter, reactions, and the building blocks of the universe. 

    • Physics – Discover the laws of motion, energy, and the forces shaping our world. 

    • Environmental Science – Learn about sustainability and the impact of human activity on the planet.

    At KS4 most pupils will study one of 2 courses, either a double award or single award qualification. 

     

    Key Stage 4 Science – WJEC The Sciences (Double Award) 

    At KS4, students follow “The Sciences” Double Award course, which provides a strong foundation of knowledge, skills, and understanding in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. This qualification counts as two GCSEs and prepares students for progression to post-16 study, including AS and A Level Sciences. 

    Course Structure 

    • Students will develop scientific knowledge and practical skills through engaging lessons and experiments. 

    • The course emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and application of science in real-world contexts. 

    Assessment 

    • Assessment is through a combination of 6 exam units and 1 controlled assessment unit. 

    • Exams cover key topics across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, ensuring a balanced and comprehensive understanding of science.

    Studying Science equips students with transferable skills highly sought by employers and essential for careers in STEM and beyond. 

     

    Key Stage 4 Science – WJEC GCSE Integrated Science (Single Award) 

    GCSE Integrated Science (Single Award) is a new qualification designed to support learning and progression through the Curriculum for Wales. It uses a thematic approach to science learning and assessment, combining all three elements of science—Biology, Chemistry, and Physics—and applying them to the modern world. 

    Qualification Details 

    • Counts as one GCSE. 

    • Can lead to further study post-16, though it is not intended for direct progression to A-level Science courses. 

    • Ideal for students who want a broad understanding of science without specializing in separate disciplines. 

    Assessment 

    • Students will complete three units, all marked by WJEC:  

    • Unit 1 – Exam (40%) 

    • Unit 2 – Exam (45%) 

    • Unit 3 – Controlled Assessment (15%) 

    Future Opportunities 

    GCSE Integrated Science provides a strong foundation for vocational and applied sciences at Level 3, such as: 

    • WJEC Diploma / Certificate in Medical Science 

    • Careers in healthcare, engineering, environmental science, and technical roles. 

    • Transferable skills developed through this course are highly valued by employers.
