Year 9 is a really important and exciting year – it’s the year you make your option choices.

These are subjects that you choose to study and complete GCSE or equivalent qualifications in.

At Cardiff West we offer a range of traditional GCSEs and Vocational qualifications and many qualifications we are starting now are the new Made for Wales GCSES. These are Level 2 qualifications.

For most colleges, apprenticeships or jobs, you need at least 5 qualifications A*-C grade, including Maths & English.

You will have certain subjects that you have to study and some choices. The subjects you have to study are:

• English,
• Maths,
• Science,
• Welsh,
• Skills for Life (Religion, Values & Ethics – RVE and   relationships and Sexuality Education – RSE)
• And you will also have compulsory Games lessons.

• Expressive Arts: Art, Graphics, Drama, Music, Performing Arts, Hairdressing, Digital Film & Media
• Languages: Spanish, French
• Humanities: History, Geography, Religious Education, Social Studies
• Science: Triple Science
• ICT: Digital Technology, Business, Computer Science
• Technology: Food & Nutrition, Hospitality & Catering, Engineering, Product Design, Textiles, Health & Social Care
• Health & Welbeing: Physical Education, Sports Leadership
