Cardiff West Community High School

religion, values and ethics

Departmental vision

Within RVE, we will aim for a deeper understanding of the key concepts. We will justify, present, analyse and evaluate a range of evidence and learners can then draw informed conclusions whilst being aware that there can be different interpretations. The ability to explain different points of view of worldwide religions and cultures will be developed. These will all allow the pupils to develop as self-aware, informed, ethical global citizens, who critically reflect on their own and others' beliefs, values and attitudes.

What matters in religion, values and ethics?

It matters that we understand that:

Events and human experiences are complex, and are perceived, interpreted and represented in different ways.

Our natural world is diverse and dynamic, influenced by processes and human actions.

Human societies are complex and diverse, and shaped by human actions and beliefs.

Informed, self-aware citizens engage with the challenges and opportunities that face humanity, and are able to take considered and ethical action.

How do we develop the four purposes in RVE?

· What role does RVE play in supporting students to become ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives?

It helps pupils reflect on their own faith and learn about the faiths and practices of others, enabling them to express themselves freely whilst demonstrating tolerance and respect for all those around them. It is up to the individual to use the knowledge and skills provided within RE to decide which door they want to open for their future.

What role does RVE play in supporting students to become enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work?

This subject will ensure students are challenged with questions about belief, values, meaning, purpose and truth to develop their own attitudes towards religious issues. Students will develop analytical and critical thinking skills, the ability to work with abstract ideas, leadership and research skills which will set them up to be able to become the key contributors to their own success.

• What role does RVE play in supporting students to become ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world?

Through religious education, we will ensure that our students have a better understanding of their importance as a steward of creation, and their role in school, the communities they serve and the world they live in to become good citizens.

• What role does RVE play in supporting students to become healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society?

RVE will help students gain a sympathetic understanding of religions, including both those that are locally represented and those which have been formative in the lives of people throughout the history of the world. They will be encouraged to become empowered to become moral, ethical decision makers where they will hold the keys to their future.
