Cardiff West Community High School

History

Departmental vision

Pupils in their history lessons will be encouraged to develop enquiry, curiosity and discover, think critically, reflect upon evidence, a deeper understanding of the concepts underpinning humanities, the ability to critically review different major events. Students will become aware of the interconnections between humans and their environment in both contemporary and historical contexts. They will be able to develop their own identity and an awareness of how they, as individuals, can shape the communities in which they live.

What matters in history?

It matters that we understand that:

  • Enquiry, exploration and investigation inspire curiosity about the world, its past, present and future.
  • Events and human experiences are complex, and are perceived, interpreted and represented in different ways.
  • Human societies are complex and diverse, and shaped by human actions and beliefs.

How do we develop the four purposes in history?

Ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives:

  • The History Department at Cardiff West Community High School aim to help our pupils develop a deep understanding of events of the past
  • Pupils will develop skills of analysing and evaluating sources of historical information to gain knowledge
  • It will also provide an awareness of aspects of diversity throughout the time periods studied

Enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work:

  • We believe that the study of local, national and international history will develop an awareness of the rights and responsibilities of humans in an ever-changing world.
  • It will also provide an awareness of aspects of diversity throughout the time periods studied and help to promote and understand tolerance and respect.

Ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world:

  • help our pupils develop a deep understanding of events of the past and be able to analyse, evaluate and interpret events throughout history that have helped shape the world we live in today.
